CVENT Favoring Pattern

Redesigning the favoriting pattern in Cvent to enhance usability, optimize workflows, and improve the overall user experience.

Introduction

As a leader in event technology, Cvent Inc. focuses on enhancing user experience in event planning and management. This focus aligns with a specific user challenge: efficiently saving and organizing preferred event-related items or services. Given the diverse range of options in event planning, such as venues, catering, and services, users often face difficulties in tracking and revisiting their choices, leading to decision-making inefficiencies.

Challenge

I worked with Cvent’s directors, PMs, researchers, designers and engineers to develop a favoring pattern that would seamlessly integrate into the user interface of their event planning and management platforms. This collaborative effort involved multiple stages to ensure the solution was both user-friendly and technically feasible.

Process

Research & Analysis:

The user research for the favoriting pattern included interviews with Cvent’s project managers and designers to identify products that would benefit most from this feature. The research aimed to address specific use cases, such as the need for event planners to easily mark and recall venues, and for users to quickly access frequently used reports.

Workshop:

To refine the favoriting feature, we facilitated a design workshop with three key segments. Scope/InventoryCritical questions were asked about the user interaction with the favoriting function and the subsequent management of saved items.Use Cases & ExamplesInvolved a competitor analysis to understand industry standards and innovative practices.SketchingParticipants visually conceptualized potential designs, allowing for a creative exploration of the features implementation.This structured approach ensured a comprehensive understanding of the feature's requirements and user expectations.

Wireframing & Prototyping:

Using some of the ideas from the workshop. I got to work and started to create low fidelity wireframes. The low-fidelity wireframes reflect a streamlined favoriting process, showcasing intuitive steps for users to save items and manage lists, with clear options for customization.

Usability Testing:

We conducted usability tests with a diverse group of users to validate the design and identify areas for improvement. Based on the feedback, we made necessary adjustments to the design.

Conclusion

I gained insights on user engagement with favoriting features, the importance of intuitive design, and the balance between familiarity and brand identity. Feedback showed that while some icons like hearts are universally recognized, they may not always align with a brand's image, prompting consideration for alternatives like stars or bookmarks. Collaborating with content designers highlighted the need for clear jargon that resonates with users, and the exploration of microinteractions revealed their potential to enhance user experience.
